INT. HONG KONG OPERAHOUSE (1998) - NIGHT

LEILA (SOPRANO) sways in the waves.

The scene is a reflection on a Mylar screen hung over the stage.

HASSAN (BARITONE) dead, with a scimitar in the chest.

EUNUCH (CONTRALTO) curses The Giaour (Tenor).

5.

THE GIAOUR (TENOR) is terrified.

CONTRALTO:
But first, on earth as Vampire sent,
Thy corse shall from its tomb be rent:
Then ghastly haunt thy native place...

Contralto recedes into the shadows.

The Giaour's "mad scene."

Strips of gray fabric (reference to a monk's habit since the original poem ends in a monastery) bind him -

- in a show of stage pyrotechnics reminiscent of Kabuki.

* They drive on the left side of the street in Hong Kong. When I realized that, I thought of reversing everything after this panel, but it just didn't look right.
