Alternate Endings of Carmilla

Welcome to the pre-production "test screening" of Carmilla's alternate endings!

We have three alternate endings here for you to consider. Yes, you do have to read a bit (sorry!) but they are all a little more "upbeat" than the original ending (X on hospital bed) in the 2013 version.

All three versions follow a scene of X beginning his lecture. The first version takes us to Transylvania as X begins the tale of how he met Stefan and Carmilla there in the summer of 1934, where we meet an older Radu - his princely upbringing beaten out of him by decades of Communism.

In the second, we meet X and Alethea in Hong Kong in 1998, at the premiere of a new opera The Giaour ("the infidel"), based on Byron's epic poem. Published in 1813, "The Giaour" imported the idea of vampires from the Orient and gave birth to the gothic subgenre. (Hong Kong is also the current home of journalist Clare Hollingworth, the model for Alethea.)

And the third version takes us to New York City in 2001, on an anniversary of the Battle of Zenta, the decisive battle of the Great Turkish War (1697 - the year Carmilla was made a vampire). I also took the liberty of moving the date of creation of The Morgenthau Plan by Anselm Kiefer. (We have met Henry Morgenthau, Jr. earlier in the film.)
